New leaders, new solutions?

What happens when you put 30 young leaders in a room asking them to solve the climate challenges? In a few days, we’ll know.

At the Point of Peace Syntegration event taking place next week, 30 young professionals identified as future leaders, will meet to discuss some of today’s hottest topics; oil, energy and power in the era of climate change. Together they are challenged to answer the following question: “How can we as young leaders, take leadership?”

One of the participants, Simon Souyris Strumse, (International Leader of the Socialist Youth League of Norway) believes that the fact that the conference is for young people, is an advantage for the outcome.
- I am hoping that we can lead the way for more progressive demands than the established international organisations have expressed. And that these demands can contribute to genuine change. This is necessary for the future, says the 22 year old political leader.

Strumse will be joined by young professionals from business, peace centres, non-govermental organisations, political parties and technical experts. Amongst these are seven young employees at StatoilHydro, the co-organizer of the Point of Peace Syntegration. From India comes two participants nominated by Dr. Pachauri, chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) last year’s Nobel Peace Laureate. Project Manager in Point of Peace, Madel Rosland, thinks that the pluralism at the Syntegration is very important.
- The climate challenge is a global issue that needs to be solved across national borders and across disciplines. We think Syntegration is an important initiative in creating ways of discussing these urgent matters, says Rosland.

The results of the Point of Peace Syntegration will be presented at the Point of Peace Summit 2008.
Date of event: 11th – 14th of August 2008
