Point of Peace Foundation
Point of Peace is a human rights and media organization which supports Nobel Peace Laureates with means of communication, both in their homelands and internationally. Point of Peace is based in Stavanger, Norway.
The foundation of our work is:
- The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, article 19, which establishes that;
Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.
- The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, article 19, which establishes that;
(1) Everyone has the right to take part in the government of his country, directly or through freely chosen representatives. (2) Everyone has the right to equal access to public service in his country. (3) The will of the people shall be the basis of the authority of government; This will shall be expressed in periodic and genuine elections which shall be by universal and equal suffrage and shall be held by secret vote or by equivalent free voting procedures.
Point of Peace support processes of democratization and peace in young democracies. Point of Peace contributes to the creation of arenas for inter-cultural dialogue between groups and nations. Point of Peace’ vision is to give a voice to those who haven’t been heard. We wish to help people who have a need and a right to communicate, whether in their homeland or internationally. By contributing to the establishment of independent media channels, we make it possible for Nobel Peace Laureates and their representatives, to communicate their view on human rights and other important issues. This also contributes to the spread of information about the Laureates’ efforts in their homelands. For example, Point of Peace facilitated the establishment of the independent radio and TV channel “Democratic Voice of Burma”, which is now quoted by the BBC and other serious media stations. Point of Peace is also taking part in the founding of a web based TV channel; Peace Channel, which will be launched this September.
The city of Stavanger has inhabitants from approximately 150 different nations who represent unique insight, qualifications and experiences. One of the goals of Point of Peace is to get the city and the region involved in the work to fight poverty, build democracy and peace. Two examples include our projects in relation to the Stavanger 2008: European Capitol of Culture.
